The Genial Seed records one of Man's attempts to control, through a concerted spiritual and aesthetic effort, a significant aspect of his physical environment. It is a translation of a mediaeval Japanese song cycle which was the indispensable musical accompaniment to the spring rice-transplanting festival, and was thus largely instrumental in assuring an adequate rice crop for the coming year.
