Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good. An original vintage booklet that is comprised of a series of extraordinary letters that were originally published in the October 1935 issue of the "T'ien Hsia Monthly". They were written during the late 1920's and the early 1930's by Oliver Wendall Holmes - a member of the United States Supreme Court - to, at that time, an unknown 22-year old Chinese law student. Facing the title page is a portrait of Justice Holmes, an etching by William Meyerowitz. Two short write-ups on this artist and this portrait are part of this booklet. No date is evident, but it is probably around 1935 based on the dates of the letters and when they originally appeared in "T'ien Hsia Monthly". Measures 6.25" x 9.5" with 58+ pages. The edges of the cover are a bit ragged; the contents are clean and intact with no marks of any kind. SALE PRICE.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Boston: Phillips Sampson, & Co., 1859. A very good copy, no dustwrapper. This is the second printing, noted by the lack of a period after "Company" on the title page, no vignette title page, and advertisements present on pp. 375-376. There are eight full-page illustrations. The head and foot of the spine and the corners are lightly worn with marginal loss of cloth at the base of the spine, but this is otherwise a very good, tight copy. Although the title page dates this volume to 1859, a gift message from a previous owner on the first blank is dated December 25, 1858, suggesting a late-1858 issue.
