Pictorial Cloth. Condition: Good Plus. No Jacket. Julius Hoppner (illustrator). First Thus. [1884]. Rose colored cloth over beveled boards decoratively stamped in gilt with a die-cut window around a full-color pastedown, boards worn and faded, boards exposed at corners, some offsetting internally but clean and tight overall. Fouque's classic marvelously illustrated by Julius Hoppner with nine full-page color chromolithographs with guards plus part-color dedoration throughout, as well as a floral dedication page by C. Haas. A landmark in color printing, the book was issued simultaneously in two sizes, folio and quarto (as this copy is), with the artwork appearing larger in the folio edition, a feat accomplished thanks to Gustav Seitz's patented pantographic process which allowed him to reproduce chromolithographs in enlarged and reduced sizes. The folio edition sold for a price of 45 marks which was the highest price of any book on the market at the time. See Bilderwelt #1643. Size: Large 4to.
