FAIR-only condition, with shelf wear and mottling of the cloth at foot of spine and in a few small places along bottom board edges and tips. Examining the title page, we find the beginnings of hinge tenderness in the gutter. Light spotting near fore-edge of Dedication page and Table of Contents page. Dust jacket FAIR-only, as well, with significant chipping, short tears, and loss of paper at foot of spine. Jacket now protected from further wear by a new sheet of removable Brodart. In 2006, a previous owner printed a two-page article about Coulter from an online encyclopedia, and that article is folded and laid in near the rear of the book.

Nevins says of this fine item: "Especially worthwhile, for this study contains an interchange of correspondence between a Georgia soldier-planter and his socially prominent family." Cobb was the son of Howell Cobb, former Governor of Georgia and President Buchanan s Secretary of the Treasury, and later Confederate general. Cobb joined the Confederate Army in 1861 and was sent to Virginia in April 1861. After the Maryland Campaign of September 1862 he was given permission to leave the army and return to Georgia. Good copy of the first edition in soft cover. Although solidly bound there are staple holes in near the spine where the they must have helped hold the binding place. Some sun fading on the spine. 104 pages.
