Edmund Dulac (illustrator). Boots Pure Drug Co. edition. 319pp. Quarto [25 cm] Brown cloth over boards with lettering and ruled borders in gilt and black ink on the spine and front cover, and a gilt and black ink stamped burning lamp vignette on the front cover. Very good. The covers are just a little concave, the spine ends and corners of the covers are gently bumped and rubbed, and the text block edges are foxed. The front hinge is a bit soft, and there is sporadic light foxing in the text and on the plates. There is a small closed tear in the bottom margin of the illustration at p. 265. With twenty tipped-in color plates by Edmund Dulac. Dulac was born in Toulouse, France. His artistic talent manifested itself early and drawings exist from his early teens. Many of these early efforts are watercolors, a medium he would prefer through most of his life. Dulac, though capable of pen and ink work, was foremost a painter and used the new technology's ability to reproduce exact tones to let the color hold the shape and define the object.
