A classic book about by-gone Lake District life first published in the 1960s. The explicit descriptions of field sports such as trail hounds, ferreting and cock-fighting are not for the faint-hearted but the author's genuine love of nature and of the countryman's year in the Lake District is revealed in his easy style of writing. In view of the nationwide condemnation of many traditional country sports in recent years, publishers may be reluctant to reprint it, but it does gives an insight into a way of life once popular in the Lake District and for that reason it makes a valuable contribution to Lakeland literature.
