Also included are full-page, black-and-white illustrated advertisements for a variety of alcoholic beverages. Marco's was a liquor retail store that had at least a couple locations in downtown Chicago. It was operated by Gerald F. Marco and Abe Marco. Four editions of this book were published in 1937, 1940, 1945, and 1949; this is the First Edition. Marco's is known to have published at least the First Edition which were targeted toward customers. Many copies of The How and When were personalized for these customers, as evidenced by the name in gilt lettering on the front cover of this copy, "Mrs. R. C. Wheeler." The following are some of the drinks discussed: Champagne, Burgundy, Claret, Medoc, Sauternes, Port, Sherry, Vermouth, Rum, Brandy, Liqueur, Whisky, and Gin. These are the types of drinks one can make in the recipe section: Cocktails, Highballs, Juleps, Hot Drinks, Punches, Cups, Smashes, Sours, Rickies, Cobblers, and Fizzes. Also, two brief sections on "Syrups and Bitters" and "Correct Bar Procedure." Excerpt from the Preface: "The purpose of this book is not to awe the reader with the stiff traditions ordinarily associated with the formal use of fine wines and rare liqueurs. Rather, it is intended as an authoritative reference guide, which in simple, uncomplicated form, may bring to you new and interesting facts concerning the origin, use and classification of the world's choicest vintages and spirits. . On the following pages you will find 1,000 recipes for cocktails and other varieties of mixed drinks. There are 45 recipes for wines with food and 75 more recipes arranged for Canape and Cocktail Snack occasions. Fifty pages have been devoted to the use-service-storing-purchasing and growing of wines. . This Book represents the work of many months and the services of more than 80 experts who assisted both here and abroad in its compilation.".
