12mo. 4.25 x 7 inches. [2] + 99 +[1] pp. + [12] pp. advertisements. In original green pictorial printed card wrapper; spine re-laid on to matching card. Advertisements on front and rear inside wrappers. Extremities worn and some foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by hand coloured folding map frontispiece, 4 plates and by 9 wood engravings in text. An 1856 reissue of the 1855 Eleventh Edition, this is one of the abridged editions produced by Isaac Barber Clifford after his father's death in 1843. It corresponds fairly closely to Goulden 103, except possibly for the number of advertisement pages at the end. The wrapper is dated 1856 at the head of the title. Includes distances, fares and useful information at the end and now information on the London and Dover (i.e. South Eastern) Railway. The Eleventh Edition was the last guide to Tunbridge Wells to bear the Clifford imprint; the advertisements inside the wrappers being for Joseph Simpson, (Successor to I. B. Clifford.), to whom Clifford had sold the business before leaving Tunbridge Wells. KENT TUNBRIDGE WELLS KENT TOWNS- GUIDES 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED KENT Goulden, p. 96 and 103 75, p.113.
