Foreword by Ben Hur Lampman. 159 pp. 9 x 6 inches. A scarce jacketed copy. Girl of the Oregon Wood tells the intimate story of pioneer life on an Oregon farm, and of children reared close to nature, enjoying the friendly acquaintance of birds and animals from whom they learned patience and kindness. Clara Ingham describes her family and her childhood experiences on a Lane County farm during the years 1868 to 1888. It was published in January 1946, a couple months before her death. Clara Cogswell Ingham (1868-1946) was born and raised on a farm about twelve miles east of Eugene, on the McKenzie River near the village of Walterville in what is known as the Cogswell Hills. Her father, John Cogswell, had come to Oregon in 1846. She attended the University of Oregon in the 1880's, had been a practicing doctor of chiropractic, was deeply involved in women's clubs, and was a member of the Verseweavers and other local and national writers associations. The illustrator, Colista Dowling (1881-1968), was a well known artist in Oregon. A book illustrator, muralist, and commercial artist, she was also considered one of the leading watercolorists in the Northwest.
