Book First Edition
The History of Medicine Series, 4. - Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, 1937, Gr.8°, XX, 266 pp., 29 Abbildungen auf 21 Taf., orig. Leinenband; beigelegt: Addenda and Errata, January 1940, kl.8°, 8 pp. First Edition with the mostly missing Addenda! The previous bibliography of Paré's work (that by Malgaigne) covered only the editions present in Paris in 1840, together with those listed in Haller. Now for the first time, Miss Doe has gathered together in one volume all the available information concerning the editions of Paré's writtings, including descriptions of eight apparently unique editions, six of which have been previously unknown to bibliographers. Janet Doe (1895-1985) was a pioneering medical librarian and educator. She was born in South Newbury, Vermont, and grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in science and was trained at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where she witnessed the effects of the 1918 flu outbreak. In 1926 she joined the New York Academy of Medicine as head of the periodicals section and in 1949 she became the first female head of the library, while also serving as President of the Medical Library Association from 1948 to 1949. She is author of the Bibliography of the Works of Ambroise Paré (1937) and editor of the first edition of the Handbook of Medical Library Practice (1942).
