The second edition of John Martin's important account of William Mariner's four years in Tonga between 1806 and 1810. Martin's account of Tonga was first published in London in 1817; this second revised edition was issued the following year and contains a large folding map of the Tongan archipelago not present in the first edition. The work is based on the life of William Mariner, who sailed on the Port au Prince, a privateer which attacked Spanish vessels in the Pacific. They landed at the Hapai Islands in Tonga in 1806, were attacked after a quarrel, and the ship was burnt and destroyed. Adopted by a Tongan chief, and given the name of the chief's dead son, he spent four years learning the language and customs of Tonga until, in 1810, he hitched a passage home on an English boat. His account of life on Tonga, prepared for the press by John Martin, is considered the best report of Tongan life and culture before the arrival of Christianity.

First Edition
Pp. lix, (i), 460; (ii), 412 + vocabulary pp. (212). With engraved frontispiece. Contemporary full calf, flat spines decorated in gilt and with title labels, expertly rebacked with original spines preserved. Corners slightly rubbed. Bookplate. First edition of this important work on the Tonga Islands. William Mariner was a British sailor on the Port au Prince that was attacked and destroyed on arrival at the Ha'apai Islands in Tonga. Mariner, the only survivor, was adopted as the King's son. He spent four years on the islands learning about the life, customs and language of Tonga. He returned to England in 1810. His account is "considered the best report of Tongan life and culture before the arrival of Christianity" Hill 1075. Cf Kroepelien 819 (second edition).
XXII, [23]-398, [2]; 398 pp.First edition of the French translation of an important account of the Tonga islands by the English William Charles Mariner (1791-1853), who lived in Tonga for four years. When he was young, Mariner sailed in the privateer Porte au Prince to the New World with the objective of attacking Spanish ships and searching for whales. They seized several Spanish vessels and added several Hawaiians to the crew in 1806. Their visit to the Tonga Islands proved fatal: almost the entire the crew was massacred by the natives (ironically, James Cook had dubbed Tonga the "Friendly Islands"). The author, however, survived and lived there from circa 1806 to 1810, observing and recording Tonga culture with a keen eye for detail. Volume two includes some interesting notes on James Cook, who with his crew had met a friendly reception there. "Mariner's meticulous observations on Tonga make this a key historical text on the history and culture of this island group" (Forbes). From the library of Marie-Louise (1791-1847), Empress as the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte until his defeat in 1814 and then Duchess of Parma. Her library contained many books on natural history, but also many travel books. It was dispersed in the 1930's. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities. A few small spots in text. Overall in very good condition.l Forbes 468; cf. Howgego, 1800-1850, M14.
