First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Bound in black patterned boards, stamped in gold in photographic dust jacket. This is an "as new" copy of this rather scarce 222 pp. book with hundreds of black and white photos and charts of the RR line. "It is fairly safe to say that the name Sylvan Beach is recognizable only to those who live there or reside nearby. Few outside the area are aware of the town's former glory or that it was once considered the "Coney Island of Central New York." Located northeast of Syracuse on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake, the "Beach" evolved into the summertime destination for crowds of fun-seekers from as far away as Albany, Buffalo, and Scranton. The development and eventual success of Sylvan Beach would never have occurred if it weren't for the New York, Ontario & Western Railway and, to a lesser degree, the Lehigh Valley Railroad. At the height of its popularity, O&W and LV on-line ridership to the Beach was augmented by throngs delivered via connections with the New York Central, the West Shore, and later, the Central's extensive interurban system. It was the perfect business relationship: Sylvan Beach furnished the attractions and the Ontario & Western and the Lehigh supplied the eager public". Size: Obong 4to.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. First Edition. Brand-new, still in shrink-wrap, neither shelf- nor edge-worn, neither sunned nor marked as a remainder. Hardcover format bound in oblong octavo format. Plentiful (1129) black-and-white photographs of the older, historical variety and lots of full-color, full-page photographs, too. Special Limited Edition of a very small run. The title is the definitive story of the historic and surviving contemporary lines of the Rome, Watertown &, Ogdensburg Railroad line and, after its 1891 acquisition by the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, its growth and development. "Hojack" means the R.W. & O railroad past, and even present lines, comprising just over 700 miles of trackage, which spanned the length and breadth of upstate New York, extending from the Adirondacks to the Niagara Escarpment, and from the Mohawk River Valley to the St. Lawrence River and on into Canada via Massena. The railroad line produced shipments of everything from apples to forest products to paper and Hematite ore and spanned steam to diesel to newer forms of locomotion. Shortlines, such as the Lowville and the Beaver River, the Massena Terminal, and the Norwood and St. Lawrence lines - just to name a few - are also thoroughly presented historically and contemporarily here. A dozen chapters, 768 pp. 1,392 images all in, 266 in full color, with drawings, illustrations, charts, tables and ephemera, too.
