(Hardcover, 1987). 1987 1st edition. Oblong 4to (248 x 295mm). Pp160. Colour plates throughout. Green boards, gilt titles to front board and spine. Very slight spotting to end-papers else very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. "This superb volume of work by Charlie Johnson Payne, universally known as Snaffles, is both a tribute to the man who was one of the greatest military and sporting artists of his time, and a fascinating chronicle of more than fifty years of sporting, military and naval life. Drawn from many public and private collections, the paintings and drawings in the book illustrate the remarkable range of Snaffles' achievement. .Born in 1884, the fourth of a bootmaker's eight children, Snaffles developed an early passion for the services. At the age of fifteen he tried to enlist in the Army to fight in the Boer War .At eighteen he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, .and it was the Gunners that were to be his first love for the rest of his life. He joined the Leicester Yeomanry in 1911 but was invalided out before the start of World War I and found himself instead covering the hostilities .as a war artist for The Graphic. .He enlisted in the Royal Naval Auxiliary in 1916, serving as a mechanic in the motor launches that helped to rescue crashed sea-planes in the Channel, and in the later stages of the war he was commissioned in the R.N.V.R.'s 'Dazzle' (camouflage) section." Snaffles' varied career is reflected in his work which covers those parts of the army and navy he was most familiar with, fox hunting and English rural life, as well as a great many illustrations depicting the Indian versions of those same subjects. Chapters include: The early years; The missing and struggling years; Making his mark in High Leicestershire; The Great War; The twenties and fame; India; Ireland and red letter days; A second trip to India; The Second World War; the last years. .

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition hardcover in navy blue paper covered boards with bright gold titles on frt board and back strip. No names, tears or soil in the 160 page text which is profusely illustrated in color and b/w. Original, price-clipped dust wrapper had some paper peel at edges, now paper peels are glued closed and missing color at periphery touched up with matching dark green marker. This is a 'landscape' format volume measuring 9.75" tall x 11.50" wide x .75" thick. I see one small 'ding' at foot of frt board, else fine. This is the third and final volume in the gorgeous and well-reviewed series about British Sporting artists by the authors. Born Charlie Johnson Payne in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1884 and died in Wiltshire in 1967. He developed an early passion for hunting in all its forms, and the Services which, as he tells us, "in those days went hand in hand". For well over seventy years he was to be a keen follower of hounds on horseback, on foot or, in his later years, by car. Snaffles' hunting works include many of his best and most loved prints such as a personal favorite of ours: "The Finest View in Europe", "Paradise" and "Great Banks". Not only did he brilliantly depict hunting in England but much of his best work was done in the 30s in Ireland and India. John Welcome is one of the most distinguished writers in the sporting field today and is the author of several sporting novels including, "The Grand National" being a best seller on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. He has also written several acclaimed biographies such as "Fred Archer", "The Sporting Empress" (Elizabeth of Austria), and a biography of Surtees whose works along with those of Kipling, were Snaffles' favourites. Rupert Collens, an ex-Cavalry Officer, has participated in most sports which Snaffles depicted and is now a leading dealer in several of our other 20th century British Sporting Artists.
