Tall Octavo; xl, 504, 451-484 pages. publisher's plain cloth, corners bent, spine faded, some significant foxing Title-page and each section preceded by leaf with chromolithographed, illuminated half-title (8 leaves) not included in paging. Varied floreated borders, partly illuminated Illuminated initials. The vignettes, initials, borders, and ornaments, are designed by Owen Jones. Illustrations drawn by George Scharf and engraved by Samuel Williams; after Giovanni de Fiesole, Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Raphael, Poussin, Gustav Heinrich Naeke and Barthelemy della Porta, John Callcott Horsley, Henry Warren and Owen Jones. In mid-Victorian England Owen's style was uniquely modern and this book is one of the greatest examples of his work. 17 inserted unpaginated section dividers (to Morning and Evening Prayers etc) on a heavier stock and illustrated in gilt, red, blue and green.

With Plates and Illustrations. ~Original half dark brown morocco, marbled paper to boards. Raised bands, blind decor, and gilt lettering to spine. Rubbing to boards, wear to board edges and corners. Spine slightly faded, minor chipping to top spine, spine edges rubbed. Hinges firm. All edges red, colour partly worn away. Front endpapers cracked at gutter, and front free endpaper trimmed to stub. Pictorial bookplate to front blank endpage. Some foxing and offsetting. Dampstaining to verso of t.p., and mild dampstaining from p. 451 to end of vol. Six full-page gilt and colour chromolithographic plates, with elaborate coloured initials, ornaments, and borders designed by Jones throughout. Vignette illustrations also by Jones. Owen Jones (1809-1874), architect, printer, and designer, was 'one of the most influential, prolific, and well-known designers of mid-nineteenth-century Britain' (ODNB), responsible for the decoration of the Crystal Palace, and one of the central figures in the mid-century enthusiasm for medieval illumination. Hardcover (Leather). Condition: Rebound. Owen Jones (illustrator). Edition Unstated. Introduction to this edition, preface, list of illustrations and notes to this edition. The text is illustrated with six, full page, chromolithographic plates, by Owen Jones; and, coloured initials and borders throughout the text. Red coloured leather covered books with gilt coloured embossed decoration, including a gilt coloured cross, to the front and back panels; and, gilt coloured titles and decoration to the back strip. Gilt to all text edges. The title says it all. This book has been sympathetically rebound:  the original leather covers have been placed on a dark red coloured cloth, the end pages and the free end pages have been replaced with a pale yellow / bath coloured page. Foxing to the pages throughout, quite pronounced at the beginning and end of the book. There is slight bumping of the rounded book corners and the leather is a little torn. The front cover has various scrapes, marks and abrasions with lesser abrasions and marks to the rear panel and there is darkening of the back strip There are no annotations and for its age is in good condition. Blindstamped outer border, cornerpieces, and central panel blocked in blind with ornate pattern of intertwined vines to boards. Blind decor to board edges. All edges gauffered gilt: an elaborate gothic diaper design of quatrefoils in lozenges. Mild rubbing to board and spine edges, board corners slightly pushed in. Minor chipping to top of spine. Endpapers marbled in French Curl pattern. Hinges sound, with no cracking to endpapers. Two tiny bookseller's labels to inside front board: 'F. Barker. Bookseller. Hammersmith.' Tiny binder's stamp of Remnant Edmonds & Remnants to blank front endpage: this firm specialised in elaborate leather bindings for ecclesiastical works, many of which were designed for them by Owen Jones, who designed the vignettes, initials, borders, and ornaments for this volume and may well have had a hand in the binding. Six full-page gilt and colour chromolithographic plates, with coloured initials and borders designed by Jones throughout. Two red silk ribbon markers, worn.
