Magazine / Periodical
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. The need for illustrators in the first half of the twentieth centuries was crucial to the success of the myriads of magazines, publishers and newspapers as well as for the thousands of companies who purchased advertising. Commercial art courses were offered throughout the nation by colleges, business schools and independent operations. ************************************ "The Federal Illustrator" was a quarterly periodical published by the Federal Schools, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The magazine covers a variety of subjects, but primarily focuses down on design, fashion and editorial cartooning. This is an interesting issue, starting out with some nifty vintage examples of advertising art. There is an article focusing on successful artist William MacKenzie, whose art traversed both commercial and fine arts. An article on Package Design by Roy Haldorson displays some packages with Art Deco design. Mabel Burwick had come up with some original ideas for cut paper displays using photography - nice to see examples of her creations! ****************************************** The front cover design was by Ernest Freihoefer. The rear cover poster design was by Norman Neilsen, of Middletown, California. ************************************************* TITLE : The Federal Illustrator / ISSUE : Volume 20, No. 3 / DATE : Summer 1936 / EDITOR : Joseph Almars / IMPRINT : Federal Schools, Inc / PLACE : Minneapolis, Minnesota PHYSICAL DETAILS : Comic-sized quarterly periodical; contains numerous illustrations; 24 pages (pagination includes exterior); 6 1/8" x 9 1/8", stapled, pictorial wraps, printed gray and black on white. ************************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - Previously owned, yet in exceptionally well-preserved state, with but near-negligible signs of handling (Mild surface ruffle, soft bumps to corner tips , a touch of creasing.
