Book First Edition
Avant-garde theatre in pre-revolutionary Russia --- First edition of this monograph of the Symbolist theatrical director Nikolai Evreinov (1879 1953), written by an important futurist poet at the request of Natalia Butkovskaia, a colleague of Evreinov and the first Russian female theatrical director. It was one of the last books of her publishing house, which closed after the events of 1917. Her husband Aleksandr Shervashidze (1867 1968), an artist and art critic of Abkhazian royal descent, designed the cover and the portrait-frontispiece of Evreinov. The incident with Evreinov's censored theatrical production of Wilde's Salomé is mentioned on p. 23 and his 1912 book on Beardsley on p. 26: "an acute psychologist and enthusiast, he revealed to us the very essence of [this artist's work]". Vasilii Kamenskii (1884-1961), besides being a poet and artist, known for his avant-garde pentagonal books, was also one of the first Russian aviators who performed international journeys in the early 1910s. Provenance: From the estate of Geoffrey Elliott (1939-2021), banker of Russian descent, author of books on 20th-c. history. Geoffrey and his wife Fay were noted collectors, especially of Oscar Wilde, Evelyn Waugh and other literary figures. Russia was also an important theme: Geoffrey's grandparents were interned in a Siberian tsarist prison camp before the October Revolution, and he focused most of his published works on the Cold War. The Elliotts donated a significant part of their collection to the library of Leeds University in 2002, but kept the Russia-related items, which we consequently acquired. Physical description:Quarto (23.2 × 17.5 mm). 101 pp. incl. frontispiece and title, [1] l. advertisement. Original illustrated wrappers, printed in colour. Condition:A few marks to the covers, spine restored; leaves lightly toned due to paper stock. Bibliography:

Petrograd: Izd. ?Sovremennoe iskusstvo? , 1917. Octavo (23 × 17 cm). Publisher's pictorial wrappers; 110, [1] pp. Cover illustration, frontis portrait, and typographic design by A. K. Shervashidze. Spine discretely rebacked; small tear to lower fold of front wrapper, still about very good. First edition. The first monograph on Nikolai Nikolaevich Evreinov (1879?1953), a revolutionary theater director, playwright, and theorist associated with the Russian Symbolist movement. The author, Vasily Kamensky (1884?1961), was a well-known Futurist poet and artist, one of the founding members of the "Hylaea" group, which issued the famous "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste" in 1912. Kamensky writes rapturously about Evreinov?s ability to push theater beyond the traditional performance and into a mass action. He writes: ?? we all became infected with a single desire to turn the ugly façade of life into hereto unseen beauty and came out onto the streets of more than twenty cities in colorful clothing with brightly colored faces.? In fact, Evreinov staged many parades and mass performances after the Bolshevik revolution. Perhaps most famously, he staged the mass spectacle ?The Storming of the Winter Palace,? performed in 1920, on the third anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution in St. Petersburg?s Palace Square. Photographs of ?The Storming? were subsequently taken for historical documentation, achieving the avant-garde conceit of merging life and art.

He was also one of the very first Russian aviators, but gave up flying after a crash in 1911. His current book, one of very few novels he wrote, described the circumstances leading to and surrounding the notorious duel between Pushkin and Leutenant Baron Georges de Heecker (Dantes). He did not, however, strive for historical accuracy.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo 23x15.5cm., wrappers, 46 (2)pp. 3000 copies. Not to be confused with Kamenskii s play Sten'ka Razin from 1916, this poem was extracted from his novel of the same name, which he worked on from 1912-1920. The subject Stepan Razin (1630-1671) was a Cossack who is famed for leading a popular uprising against the landed gentry and Tsarist bureaucracy in Southern Russian from 1670 to 1671. Razin was both a proponent for freeing Cossacks but also a brigand who terrorized local townships on the Volga for booty,By the time he led the rebellion he had acquired a reputation for supernatural powers from his skill in battles in Dagestan, Azerbaijan, Astrakhan and Persia. The rebellion was successful in many towns and cities, but finally routed by tsarist troops and Razin was executed in pieces in Red Square. He posthumously became a folk hero with legendary tales, music and film. Kamenskii (1884-1961) loomed large in the world of Russian Futurism. His poetry of that era largely gave way to prose works by the mid-1920s. Modernist page design, front and rear covers by Evgenii Belukha (1889 1943), artist and graphic designer; he exhibited internationally in the 1920s. Rare: Worldcat locates this in one copy only in North American libraries (Cornell); MOMA 791.

8vo, pp. 200, with frontispiece and 14 wood-engraved illustrations by Dmitrevsky, title and initials by Nikolai Vasilievch Il'in; a very good copy in the original red cloth, silvered spine, original dustjacket designed by Il'in (chipped with loss to head and tail of spine, small abrasion to front cover).First edition of Kamensky's long narrative poem, preceded by a play on the same subject in 1925. The Don Cossack Emelyan Pugachev claimed to be Catherine the Great's husband, Peter III, assassinated in 1762, and led a peasant revolt in 1773-4. Pugachev was a favourite Bolshevik theme, and the present work may be seen as a companion piece to Kamensky's popular work Sten'ka Razin (1918), which treats another Cossack hero, who led a revolt against the feudal boyars in 1670.
