Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Book. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 456 pp., beautifully illustrated with photographs of Greek Revival mansions, interiors, public buildings. Roger Kennedy was the head of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and author of several lavish books on architecture. This is perhaps his most magnificent production, and it has become one of the standard references on the style, which had not received a good treatment for several decades. Greek Revival is far more than just another architectural style; it expressed the hopes and pretensions of the early Republic, and it is that sentimental or philosophical attachment which makes the study of it so much richer than merely the admiration of old buildings.

Hardcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Large quarto. [8], 455, [1]pp. Original pictorial dust jacket over cloth with blind-stamped lettering on front cover and gold lettering on spine. Color frontispiece. Fascinating work in which the author explores the styles of living and governing fostered by the American Greek Revival, a period that reached full flower in the 1820s and flourished until its spirit was crushed by the tragedy and pessimism of the Civil War. In the first full-scale study of this era, Kennedy uses architecture as a springboard to launch into the realm of social history. This work is profusely illustrated with over 190 spectacular full-color photographs specially commissioned for the book. Dust jacket in overall very good, binding and interior in fine condition.
