Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Commercially produced autograph album. Oblong 12mo. Measuring 6¼" x 4¾". [80] unnumbered leaves. Textured cloth over boards, all edges gilt. Contains 25 gelatin silver prints mounted on the rectos of 25 color paper leaves. The images are a mix of outdoor and indoor small cameo portraits of Shaker women, captioned in ink by each woman underneath the photograph, including their date of birth (ranging from 1835 to 1897). Spine is lightly rubbed, front free endpaper lightly foxed, near fine. An historically important album of original photographs and accompanying captions dating from circa 1921-1930 (determined, in part, on the presence of "Dewey" a noted canine member of the community). Established in 1792, Canterbury Shaker Village remained prominent for 200 years. At its height in the 1850s, 300 people lived and worked in over 100 buildings on 3,000 acres. The Village experienced a surge in membership during the 1880s and became the site where the official newspaper, *The Shaker Manifesto*, was printed. Canterbury remained the most influential Shaker community well into the 20th Century. Included in the album is a portrait of Edith M. Green, one of the few African-American Shakers who lived at Canterbury, and Eldress Emma B. King, instrumental in the founding of the Library of the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham, New York. The final portrait is of Ethel Hudson, who would become the last remaining Canterbury Shaker. Following her death in 1992, the Village has been maintained exclusively as a museum and is designated a National Historic Landmark. All 25 women are in customary Shaker dress (simple full-length calico dress and Shaker bonnet). Most of the photographs are outdoor portraits (with buildings and gardens partially visible in the background of a few images). Simple online searches turn up references to most of the women, many renowned for their crafts, mostly furniture and Shaker box making. A unique photographic record of the Canterbury Shaker Community. A list of all 25 members, including birth dates, is available.
