Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 38pp., disbound. Nice copy. Inscribed on the half-title, 'With Mr Kinnaird's Compts to Sr. Charles Stuart'. A bitter denunciation of Stuart's conduct and character, privately issued by Lord Kinnaird as an outraged rebuttal of the 'despicable intrigue' which linked him with an assassination attempt on the Duke of Wellington. It was a notorious affair which reflected ill on all concerned. Byron (Don Juan, Canto IX) called Wellington's behaviour 'shabby', not least, one supposes, because Kinnaird's brother Douglas was one of his closest friends. This remarkable copy was delivered to Stuart himself, and the 'Mr Kinnaird' of the inscription must be Douglas, Charles' only surviving brother, the titled Charles himself having been banished to Italy. COPAC gives copies at the BL and Southampton only, with OCLC recording two others.
