Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Beyond the Pleasure Principle, edited by Illari Laamanen. Featuring: John Divola, Armi Ratia, Estelle Hanania, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen, Aaron Schuster, Takeshi Murata, Tyler Adams, Luigi Russolo, Reba Maybury, Kohei Yoshiyuki, Nicole Howalt. Hardcover. 144 pages. With poster insert. Designer: Johanna Lundberg. Printer: G?teborgs Tryckeriet. "According to Sigmund Freud, the pleasure principle refers to the instinctual seeking of pleasure and avoiding pain in order to satisfy biological and psychological needs. Pleasure principle is oftentimes considered to be the strongest impulse guiding individual?s life. In his later writings, Sigmund Freud refers to the ?compulsion to repeat?, and declares that it might well be powerful enough to disregard the pleasure principle. This publication taps into this tension. The underlying motive isto create a scenario that deals as much with our complex relationship with nature and habitat as it does with transformation and letting go. An emphasis is put on the physical shared environment, but the tone is psychologically charged. Beyond the Pleasure Principle thrives from similar thematic framework as FCINY?s previous publication The Powers That Be that used the knowledge of the body and manifestations of physical energy as its point of departure. But in this case the physical and psychological energies and tensions can be considered to be intertwined, and analyzed through artistic gestures and three key themes: ritual, retrograde and repetition.Beyond the Pleasure Principle was produced on the occasion of two exhibitions, The Pleasure Principle at Sinne in Helsinki (June 4?July 31, 2016) and The Limits of Control at Station Independent Projects in New York City (August 13?September 4, 2016). The Pleasure Principle features works by John Divola, Camille Henrot, Maija Luutonen and Armi Ratia. The Limits of Control features works by Tyler Adams, Estelle Hanania, Nicolai Howalt, Jouko Lehtola, Takeshi Murata, Iiu Susiraja and Kohei Yoshiyuki. The exhibitions are curated by Ilari Laamanen and produced by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York in collaboration with Sinne and Station Independent Projects.".

Unpaginated (84 pp.), with 42 four-color plates, 15 black and white plates plus numerous additional color illustrations. 12 x 9-1/2 inches. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From Nazraeli Press: "Martin Parr is the subject and guest-editor of Witness Number 3, the successful new series published by JGS, Inc. and distributed by Nazraeli Press. For his contribution to the series--in which one artist is selected for each volume to present [his] own work as well as work by other artists--Parr unleashes his scorching humor in the series 'Art World,' photographs made at art gallery and museum openings which reveal more about the art world than some may be comfortable with. This highly entertaining body of work is tempered by the somewhat gentler look at Sri Lanka, made in collaboration with Susie Parr, called 'Little England.' Together, Martin Parr's photographs and Susie Parr's text create a verbal and visual snapshot of Nuwara Eliya, a hill town in the heart of Sri Lanka. Parr rounds out his volume of Witness with a section called 'Three Ways to Make a Book,' which documents how photographers Rob Hornstra, Mark Neville, and Bart Sorgedrager were able to self-publish and distribute their own books; a presentation of portfolios by Japanese photographers Keizo Kitajama, Kohei Yoshiyuki, and Osamu Kanemura; and an interview with Parr conducted by Gerry Badger.

Hardcover. Condition: New in publisher's shrink wrap. First English language edition. Large oblong octavo. 128pp. B/w photo-illustrated dust jacket, with white lettering on the front cover and spine. Black paper boards. The first English language edition of this controversial work, following its original 1980 Japanese publication. 62 images throughout. "Captured in three Tokyo parks in the early seventies, Kohei Yoshiyuki's 'The Park' features some of the most intriguing photographic works of art ever. Shot at night using flash and infrared film, the photographs show hetero- and homosexuals gathering for furtive sexual encounters in the Shinjuku, Yoyogi, and Aoyama parks. These amorous scenes, however, are unpleasantly crowded; even before Yoshiyuki (b. 1946) approached them with his camera, the couples had become objects of desire for voyeurs. 'It's not the sex in Yoshiyuki's photographs that is shocking, but rather, it is the reckless, pent-up fascination of the voyeurs-men so possessed that, for the moment, nothing else exists or matters-and the sense that we've all been there,' writes Vince Aletti. The photographs, which generated a great deal of interest when first published in an austere Japanese edition in 1980, are presented here in duotone quality alongside an interview with the artist conducted by Nobuyoshi Araki." - The Publisher.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. "I had my camera, but it was dark," he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the '70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them." cm 21x26; pp. 90; BW ills.; paperback lacking the dust jacket.
