Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A good hardback first edition without a dust jacket. With illustrations, a ground floor plan and folding pedigree, all of which are present. 348 numbered pages. All edges gilt. The cloth is lightly rubbed, and there is a bit of creasing to the head and tail of the spine and to the four outer corners. A private book plate is stuck to the front paste-down, and there is some foxing to the opening and closing pages. The binding is secure and the main contents are clean and complete. There are some page reference annotations (in biro) in the top left-hand corner of the rear paste-down (see image), and some short marginal lines on the corresponding pages. The book is protected by a non-adhesive transparent dust jacket. (I removed the jacket when taking the photographs to avoid glare/reflection). Overall, a good hardback first edition, but with some annotations on the rear paste-down and some very short marginal lines on a small number of pages. Collated and complete.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover.Gift inscription to Rose Cecil Strickland from her father and mother 1st June 1901. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition 362pages, black and white illustrations, fold out genealogical tables. Green cloth with gilt titles and cut page edges, boards with original bevelled edge. Heavy book so will incur extra charges for overseas delivery. Corners bumped and rubbed to spine edges. Contents clean. Swallowfield, situated five and a half miles south-west from Reading, has certainly been no exception to the proverbial skittishness, since from the time of Edward the Confessor it has constantly cast its owners. In the Domesday Survey, Berkshire is divided into twenty-two hundreds, and we find mention of two hundred manors, forty-six of which were vested in the Crown. Amongst the latter, in the hundred of ?Cereledone? or Charlton, were ?Selingefelle?, now Shinfield, and ?Soanesfelt? or Swalfelle, now Swallowfield, which two manors appear not to have been separated till the year 1553. This is a rare and valuable book, featuring the history of Swallowfield and its owners, the Lady Russell. The hardback binding and 1st edition special attributes add to its collectable value. The book is sure to be a valuable addition to any collection of antiquarian books, comics, and magazines. The pages are in excellent shape, and the cover is also well-maintained for its age. This book is a must-have for any collector or history enthusiast.
