The frontispiece is a n old-style two-tone photograph of a miniature of Lear, glued in at somewhat of an angle. The aforementionerd letter which is the subject of this re-publication and comparison was penned in 1793 by Lear, who was an intimate of George Washington (and by most accounts the last person to whom Washington spoke any words during his final illness.). VG, save for a few spots at top of front cover. From an old estate, unread.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8°. 16 p., entirely uncut and folded, as issued. With two small holes throughout, probably from early provisional binding. Paper partly broken in back fold. - Tobias Lear, earlier George Washington's secretary, was sent as commercial agent to Saint-Domingue, where he witnessed the final struggles for independence. In the report, these events form the background for his complaint about a loss of income and material goods, for which he asks to be reimbursed. Madison recommends to honor his request.
