Idaho-born poet Ezra Pound (1885 - 1972) was a major figure of the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry. The unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917 - 1969), is a lengthy work. Fluid with a flexible conversation-like structure, the epic poem touches on the ancient, Renaissance, eras of the Orient, and Chinese verse forms, ideographs and Confucian thought, and modern history in its evaluation of history by comparison. Critical essays in this volume are: 1, The Broken Mirrors & the Mirror of Memory (Hugh Kenner); 2, Pound & Frobenius (Guy Davenport); 3, The Metamorphoses of Ezra Pound (Sister M. Bernetta Quinn); and 4, A Man of No Fortune (Forrest Read, Jr.).
