Hardcover first edition - First US printing. A story set in China before the start of the Second World War when the Chinese were fighting alone against the Japanese invasion of their country. Illustrated with a full color frontispiece and ten full page black and white drawings by Kurt Wiese, as well as small drawings at the head and tail of each chapter. Lewis and Wiese's first collaboration "Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze" received the Newbery Award. Pronunciation and notes, illustrated endpapers. 273 pp. Good only in orange cloth with some wear, fraying to corners, and foxing to edges of textblock (affecting the margins of a few pages), no dust jacket.
