De difícil classificação, pois não é narrativa pura, nem ensaio, nem biografia, nem livro de memórias, nem crítica literária, sendo um pouco de tudo isso, À Sombra de Mestre Aquilino ficará certamente a integrar, com proveito, a bibliografia passiva daquele que é um dos escritores mais ricos, mais apaixonantes (e menos estudados) da literatura portuguesa, cuja importância só me parece ter paralelo no brasileiro João Guimarães Rosa, e que urge redescobrir, fazendo com que «regresse aos textos escolares donde foi vergonhosamente banida já em tempos de democracia», como denuncia oportunamente o autor.
