Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. In good condition. Boards are worn with moderate scuffing, edge wear. Rounded corners with light loss. Hinges are beginning to crack, but remain intact. Spine dry with creasing. Old hand ownership signature on front fly leaf. Interior evenly toned with light foxing. Binding is tight and intact. Free of known marginalia. Please see photos. First American edition, from the second London edition. Of Gross Clinic fame by Thomas Eakins in 1875, Samuel D. Gross was an American academic trauma surgeon. A bronze statue of him was cast by Alexander Stirling Calder and erected at the National Mall, but moe in 1970 to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Eakins portrait of him hangs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He established himself as one of the most capable surgeons in America and the originator of abdominal surgery, as well as the first ovariotomost. COLN1842LIMA-variant.
