No Binding. Condition: Very Good. A fine original hand-coloured engraving, printed in 1833. Colouring not contemporary, but delicately and expertly done. Mounted (matted) and ready to frame. An excellent opportunity to purchase an early print of the Sands Point Lighthouse which is located in Nassau County of Long Island, New York along its northern coast, in the Town of North Hempstead. The fourth lighthouse to be established on Long Island, this 1809 stone tower was built by an American Revolutionary War veteran who stayed on as its first keeper for many years. The Lighthouse is sometimes referred to the Mitchell Lighthouse, after Samuel L. Mitchell, the man fought for it to be constructed. There is page of information about its history.

First Edition
8vo. 71, [1] pp. Frontisp., numerous plates, text illustrations, woodcut-engraved text illustrations. Light-coloure blue-green softcovers, black lettering on front cover (minor age toning to fore-edges, slight chipping & creasing to 1 corner), still VG copy. First edition of this scarce and well-illustrated history of steam navigation, and steamship in the Northeast on the Long Island Sound in the 19th century, which was distributed by the Company at the 1893 Columbian World's Fair in Chicago. The Stonington Steamship Co. was organized in 1867 by the Stonington Railroad and others to operate between New York and Stonington, CT, and later consolidated into the Providence & Stonington Steamship Co. in 1875 which would continue to operate steamers across the Long Island Sound until it was acquired by the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR which discontinued the steamship routes after 1896. Of particular interest in this history are the lavish accommodations on the SS Connecticut which featured a Grand Salon, Grand Stairway, Cafes, shopping, and other features, as well as promoting the stylish features of the SS Maine and SS New Hampshire.
