Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. Hardcover in dust jacket, ISBN 9031301841. Revised Second Edition. 84 pages, with 41 full page color or black and white plates. Previous owner's name and circular embossed stamp to front free endpaper. No other markings; binding is solid and square. Dust jacket has some wear and crinkling to the edges, with scattered scratches, scuffs and some soiling of the white rear panel - still quite presentable. A collaboration between the artist M C Escher and crystallography researcher Caroline MacGillavry. Escher's periodic drawings beautifully illustrate the principles of symmetry groups, particularly the idea of color symmetry. Each plate in this book is used as the basis for discussion by MacGillavry of fundamental and advanced concepts in symmetry, with special application to crystallography. From the Introduction: "It is no wonder that X-ray crystallographers, confronted with the ways that nature solves the same problem of packing identical objects in periodic patterns, are interested in Escher's work. Escher's periodic drawings would make excellent material for teaching the principles of symmetry.".
