Publlished by Scolar Press for the Navy Records Society, Aldershot, 1990, being volume 129 of the Society publications in this series; 8vo, 155 x 230mm; standard blue cloth titled gilt on the spine and with the roundel of the Society in gilt on the front cover; no dust wrapper called for; pp xix, 521; frontispiece of Hawke in 1748 from a mezzotint by J MacArdell after G Knapton and with nine maps or charts in the text; extremely slight fading of the spine but otherwise in near fine condition. . . . . . Edward Hawke, later 1st Baron Hawke, was from a Yorkshire background through his mother and was born in 1705. He was a career naval officer principally seeing action against the French from around 1730 although earlier he had served in west Africa and in north America and the north Atlantic more generally. Notable engagements included a victory during the Battle of Quiberon Bay and gaining credit during the complex and confused Battle of Toulon. He retired from active service in 1762 although he continued to serve ending as First Lord of the Admirality from 1766 to 1771. He was also a Member of Parliament from 1747 to 1776 and he died five years later.
