First American trade edition. Original light brown buckram pictorially stamped and lettered in red and blue on front cover and spine. Pictorial endpapers in black and white. Small booksellers label on rear paste-down. Heavy black stock for plate VI has neat repair, not affecting the image. . [128] pages. Twelve color plates mounted on heavy black stock, with descriptive tissue guards, and numerous designs in black and white in the text. Red lettering on spine a little rubbed, otherwise a Fine copy. "Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, Mackenzie [1887-1944] studied at the Bradford College of Art and then at the Slade. When he finished his studies, he was commissioned by the publisher James Nisbet to illustrate in watercolour an edition of Arthur and His Knights [1920]. Most of his illustrative work shows the influence of Beardsley, Harry Clarke and colour plate illustrators like Kay Nielsen. The Crock of Gold [1926], for example, is illustrated with twelve colour plates and black and white decorative headings and tailpieces. He was also an etcher and engraver and contributed to the Sketch and other journals" (Horne). In the present, he takes on one of the most famous and oft-printed of the Arabian Nights.

First edition. 4to. Publisher's pictorial cloth with lettering and designs in red and blue. Top edge gilt. Inscribed by the illustrator on the front blank, "To Mr Butler Wood/ with best wishes/ T. Mackenzie/ 1919". In addition there is an accompanying letter in Mackenzie's hand. A fine copy. Pictorial endpapers with striking silhouette drawings. 12 wonderful art nouveau style colour plates and each page decorated with silhouette and line drawings. This book is a wonderful co-operation of Ransome telling the story of Aladdin and his lamp in rhyme and beautiful decorations by Thomas Mackenzie. The recipient of this book was one of the founders of the Bronte society and the librarian for Bradford public libraries, West Yorkshire. The handwritten letter from Mackenzie to Mr Wood thanks him for sending a "rather flattering" notice from the "Athenaeum" and saying that he can now "judge the book itself from the endorsed copy". Mackenzie laments problems with the production of the Edition-de-luxe of the book saying that the sheets are not dry enough to be bound up yet because of "The continuous damp weather and the hand made paper it is printed on". As a result he estimates that the Deluxe edition will not go on sale until sometime in 1920 (the book was aimed at the Christmas gift market of 1919). He also says that he hopes that Mr Wood will like the book, "there are mistakes in it due to inexperience and immaturity which I hope you will close your eyes to.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. MacKenzie, Thomas (illustrator). Limited edition. #168 of 250 copies signed by the artist. Folio, full cream cloth, silhoutte border designs and titles all in full gilt. Twelve tipped-in full color plates (beautifully printed) by Thomas MacKenzie. Captioned tissue guards plus line drawings and page decorations in black throughout. Top edge gilt. Spine quite darkened and a bit worn. Cloth edges modestly sunned while cover gilt remains bright. Back cover moderately soiled. Light rippling to right front panel border. Interior fine. Printed on very heavy, hand-made paper, uncut. Profusely decorated throughout. This is MacKenzie's finest book; he did only a few titles, but this is the only one that received the full gift book treatment. Not a surprise, given the late date of this, when the gift book market was winding down after World War I. His style is reminiscent of Edmund Dulac's eastern, oriental paintings, but his work is uniquely his own, bringing in detail worthy of a miniaturist like Arthur Szyk, and very lush, bright colors. Uncommon, with a relatively small limitation. A beautiful production, cover to cover. The previous owner has protected it with a handsome oriental paper as a dust jacket. signed by MacKenzie.

Signed limited edition, number 232 of 250 copies signed by the artist. An early work by Ransome, published over a decade before Swallows and Amazons. This lavish Christmas gift book is perhaps the finest work of the illustrator Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944). Ransome started work on this children's book in rhymed verse in the winter of 1913-14 but did not consider it finished until 20 December 1914. One day later he signed a publishing contract with Nisbet and Co. Publication was, however, delayed by the war. Ransome's bibliographer, Wayne G. Hammond, notes that "Ransome complained on 15 February 1915 that Mackenzie had 'suddenly gone off to Serbia'" but also that it was "company tradition at Nisbet's. that Ransome was frequently out of the country and impossible to contact". The delays allowed Ransome to revise the text and on 1 September 1917 Ransome informed his mother that Aladdin had been set in type. The volume would not, however, be published for another two years. An enthusiastic review in the Times Literary Supplement notes that, "Mackenzie's twelve coloured and mounted plates are nearly all charming in colour, fresh in feeling, and a happy mean between the merely decorative and the illustrative. The Princess is properly lovely, the genies properly terrible, and Aladdin at once gallant and a little wistful". Hammond, Ransome, A19a; Times Literary Supplement, 11 December 1919, p. 733. Quarto. Original white buckram, spine and front cover lettered and illustrated in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Colour frontispiece, 11 colour plates tipped-in as issued, captioned tissue guards, and line drawings throughout the text, including vignettes, head- and tailpieces, and decorative initials and borders. Minor soiling to corner of front cover, bright gilt on covers, foot of spine slightly worn; a very good copy.

American issue with Brentano on the spine (though printed and bound in the UK with the rest of the limitation). Large quarto, 335mm x 265mm. Full white buckram with gilt embossed lettering and illustration. Top edge is gilt and others are untrimmed. A near fine copy, previous owner's name to the front blank. From endpaper to endpaper each page is decorated with black and white drawings, in a striking art nouveau style. There are twelve colour plates mounted beneath captioned tissue guards, all are in perfect condition. The plates are vibrant and striking. This book is a wonderful collaboration of Ransome, telling the story of Aladdin and His Lamp in rhyme, and beautiful decorations by Yorkshire artist, Thomas Mackenzie. In a letter in late 1919 Mackenzie laments problems with the production of this Edition-de-Luxe saying that the sheets were not dry enough to be bound up, because of "the continuous damp weather and the hand made paper it is printed on". As a result the Deluxe edition did not go on sale until sometime in 1920 (the book was aimed at the Christmas gift market of 1919).
