First Edition
FIRST EDITION, 2 vols, 8vo, pp xvi, 401; viii, 398; hand-coloured frontispiece (author in Syrian costume), contemporary green half calf, some wear to head and tail of spine, very good and clean. "The author compares his letters to those of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and discusses the difficulty of combining accurate observations with literary elegance: 'the refinement of her enthusiasm prevailed over the correctness of her descriptions'. Madden had trained as a surgeon, though he never practised in England, but because of this he was able to enter areas closed to most Europeans, mainly the harem and some slave bazaars. He travelled in the Levant from 1824-27. His work also contains much information on Egypt and Egyptology." Blackmer Blackmer 1056; not in Abbey.
