Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. (1958), 12mo, 14, [18] pp. Near Fine in VG+ glassine dj. "Containing the first appearance in English of the Prologue in which Aldus announces his plans to publish the first printed editions of Aristotle's works and describes his Thesaurus as containing 'practically everything that anyone could desire in order to achieve perfect knowledge of Greek literature.'" Translated by Antje Lemke with an introduction by Donald P. Bean. This is a collection of facsimile pages of the Latin prologue and specimen pages of the Greek text from the Thesaurus Cornucopiae in the Brewster House Typographical Collection. From the introduction: "Aldus, who has been called the father of book publishing, hoped to combine the practical demands of book publishing with the artistic ideals of fine printing. It was his intent to produce attractive, useful, and instructive books at a fair price. In the Thesaurus Cornucopiae of 1496, Aldus and his collaborators collected and edited with incredible labor the work of thirty-four ancient grammarians. The volume established the high goals of careful editing and scholarship maintained by the numerous scholars who later composed the so-called Aldine Academy, and who edited the long line of editiones princeps of Aesop, Aristophanes, Demosthenes, Homer, Pindar, Plutarch, and Sophocles which the Aldine press published, in addition to the complete works of Aristotle promised in the 1496 Prologue." In English, Latin and Greek.

hardcover, dust jacket. Aldus Manutius (illustrator). 6.7 x 9.5 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 312 pages. The Greek Editions of Aldus Manutius and his Greek Collaborators was first published in Greek in 2015, in order to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Venetian printer. A succinct introduction on the pioneers of Renaissance humanism in Crete is followed by a thorough presentation of the graphic aspect of Aldus's Greek editions, that is, initials and headpieces as well as different families of typeface and other features. The second part of the book consists of a catalogue and commentary of all his Greek editions in chronological order. The comments focus on the main subject of each work, its previous editions in Greek or in Latin translation, if any, and on the Prefaces written by Aldus. With an Introduction by Stepanos Kaklamanis. Illustrated in color.
