Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Brown leather binding with red leather label on the spine with gilt lettering. Binding tight and complete; boards with chips taken from the edges; pages dusty with light age toning. John Mason (1706?1763), nonconformist divine and author, born at Dunmow, Essex, early in 1706 began his training for the ministry under John Jennings but he was only seventeen when Jennings died, and probably completed his studies in London. His first employment was as tutor and chaplain in the family of Governor Feaks, near Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In 1729 he became minister of the presbyterian congregation at Dorking, Surrey. Thence he removed in July 1746 to succeed John Oakes as minister of a congregation at Carbuckle Street (or Crossbrook), Cheshunt, formed by a union in 1733 of presbyterians and independents. He had previously attracted attention by his ?Plea for Christianity,? 1743, and his ?Treatise on Self-Knowledge,? 1745.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Volume displays mild commensurate wear to covers and aging to interior. Brown buckram covers feature blind-tooled filigree on front and back, as well as gilt on front. Boards show overall rubbing, with rare small chips along edges and bumping to corners, more to upper corners. Spine is notably chipped, with softening of ends and a large 0.25" long chip to head, as well as some chips along shoulders. Binding is overall secure with a slight gap at title page. Front endpaper shows lovely gift inscription in ink and pencil. Interior is moderately toned, displaying occasional foxing as well as a persistent stain along fore edge and corners of pages 1 to 11. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Textblock edges show expected foxing and toning. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. ** 57 pages. 4 x 6.25 inches. ** The Gospel for the Poor is a discourse made by the American preacher and theologian on the texts of the Bible, which is meant to be an encouragement to those materially not favored. It is a call to those who are desperate or weary, to take heart and believe in the benevolence of fate under God, and faith in the government of the Lord. Most of all it reminds the poor that they, according to the Gospel, are those to whom the word of God will first be preached. ** Includes an introduction by the Rev. Gardiner Spring. Includes publisher's ads at end of volume. ** Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer.
