Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Later green cloth, lettering stamped in white on spine; pp. [323], [5] (ads), with 8 drawings by the author. Includes the half-title, but not the original endpapers. Translated from Russian into German by Gustav Specht. Corners and spine tips gently bumped; text slightly rolled, with upper board extending about 1.8" beyond lower. Nice woodcut-illustrated bookplate on front paste-down; contemporary ownership signatures on half-title (in Russian). An early Russian sci-fi novel, illustrated by Massjutin (Masiutin), who emigrated to Berlin in 1921 and illustrated German translations of Pushkin, Tolstoy, Blok, and many more. Besides book illustration he also created commercial art (logos, labels, posters), he published theoretical and critical works on illustration and on major graphic artists (Toulouse-Lautre, Thomas Bewick, etc.), and he worked for the theater. In 1945, he was accused of cooperation with Ukrainian nationalists and arrested by the Soviet occupation authorities, and put in Saxenhausen camp for over a year. After this "loyalty test," he earned some big commissions in the late 1940s: a monument to Glinka in Berlin's Russian cemetery, and sculptural decoration of the Soviet embassy.
