This account describes General Joseph Wheeler's successful interception of Sherman's forces under McCook and Stoneman, resulting in a decisive defeat of the Federal cavalry divisions. It encompasses the Confederate defense of the railroads in Newnan and Macon, Georgia. In the vicinity of Macon, the Confederacy launched an attack on Stoneman's forces, nearly annihilating them before they could retreat. As a result, General Sherman came to the realization that this cavalry could not establish a significant presence on the railroad south of Atlanta, either by choice or inability.
