First Edition
Chez Jean Mossy, Pere & Fils. Marseille. 1786. New, revised and corrected edition - and possibly the best edition. The first edition appeared in 1766. xxvi, 522 pages. Engraved device to title page and engraved tail-pieces. Handsomely bound in full mottled tan calf with very attractive gilt decorations to spine, marbled endpapers and page edges are red. There is a "B" to the tail of the spine which may indicate the bindery. WITH THE BOOK PLATE OF MARIO AND FIAMMETA WITT - see below for details. Spine slightly rubbed and lacks a tiny portion at tail. Prelims slightly browned with a couple of spots otherwise a remarkably clean and fresh copy of a very scarce item in a lovely binding. Mario Witt collected together one the most famous libraries of maritime literature which was auctioned off by Bloomsbury Book Auctions in 1996. Leo S. Olschki was founder in 1886 of the prestigious Italian publishing house of the same name. His daughter Fiammetta Witt née Olschki married Mario Max Witt (earlier Wittkower). She is the granddaughter of Leo Samuel Olschki, and niece of Leonardo Olschki and Cesare Olschki. Mario Witt's parents were Rudolf and Margot Wittkower. Notice to Seafarers on their Health. Work Necessary for Sea Surgeons & All Sailors in General who are embarked in buildings where there are no Surgeons.

First Edition
FIRST EDITION. Full morocco with elaborate gold-tooled spine and decorative corner design. First edition of a valuable work on diseases that commonly attack seamen. Divided into two parts, the first deals with a number of prevalent diseases at sea: scurvy, seasickness, rheumatism, various fevers, and venereal diseases. The second section treats of external problems: fractures, drowning, hernias, burns. Other chapters are devoted to hygiene, tropical diseases in the French colonies of West Indies, and recipes for medicines. Dr, Mauran, "master of arts in surgery," apparently had not read James Lind's Treatise of the Scurvy (1753) describing the juice of lemons for the prevention of scurvy, for he added, "je ne connois alors de meilleurs remedes à prescrire que ceux du sieur Moret, qui sont tràs renommàs pour cette maladie." This important work appears to be unknown to biographers.
