Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. Ex-Library First Edition. Decorated green cloth; blindstamped black cover decorations; gilt embossed title; gilt spine lettering. With numerous black-and-white illustrations, engravings, woodcuts from various sources. Simple map of Chicago follows "Guide to Chicago" in rear. Map is followed by a multi-page advertisement for The Audiphone and a one-page ad for additional publications by this publisher. Vintage signature of "John Wentworth Chicago Ill" at upper title page. Likely this is "Long John" Wentworth (1815-1888), one of contributors to the book. He was the editor of the "Chicago Democrat," publisher of an extensive Wentworth family genealogy, a two-term mayor of Chicago, and a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Cover corners rubbed; lower front corner cloth worn through to board. Head and tail of spine creased and chipped, with tiny tears. Faint mark where library spine label was removed. Rear hinge paper cracked; binding a bit fragile. Internal library marks: bookplate and inkstamps to inside front cover; few small scars and marks to front endpaper; inkstamp to rear endpaper. Old New Hampshire/Concord Historical Society embossed seal at lower title page, a possible connection to Wentworth, who was born in New Hampshire. Inkstamp name of another prior owner at lower margin of title page. Rear hinge paper cracked; binding a bit fragile. In spite of all the activity on the endpapers and title page, the rest of the text is clean, free of defects, and unworn.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. This is a later printing of author James Baird McClure's compilation of speeches by American orator Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899). Rare in its dust jacket, this copy is a real find, and is not clipped. The dust jacket has a black and white pictorial cover, black title on the spine, and a full page ad for "The Audiophone" for the deaf on the back cover. DJ is browned with age, toned around the edges, rubbed and shelfworn along the fore-edge, wrapped in mylar. There is a very shallow 2" chip missing along the top edge close to the spine, and a chip missing from the top right corner on the front cover. There are soil markings on the front and back of the DJ. Dark green cloth covered boards have a silver border and title on the front cover and spine. Boards have lightly worn edges, folded head and tail caps on the spine. Covers are rubbed, front and back; the corners are discolored and starting to fray. Green and white patterned pastedowns are toned and discolored by DJ. There is a faint stamp on the top right corner of the first endpage. Rear hinge is damaged - the pastedown paper is torn almost all the way down. Interior pages are lightly toned around the edges, but mostly clean; corners are sharp. Ingersoll was one of the most popular orators of his time, when oratory was public entertainment. He's also known for his fervent defense of agnosticism and his friendship with Walt Whitman. Illustrated. ; Oblong Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 336 pp.
