Hardcover. Condition: Good. Special Edition. Octavo; xii, 266 pages, brown cloth, spine dulled Inscribed by McClure for Christmas at New York City in 1937 to "Dear Niles:", and continued in part, " I owe you much + I thank you with all my heart for your gentle kindliness to me S.S. McClure". Willa Cather wrote thie text from McClure's personal reminiscences, as proven by F. B. Adams. Laid in are two messages about this book. The first is a dittograph piece on the embossed letterhead of Edward A. Rumely (of NYC and LaPorte, Indiana) as a Christmas present: " He knows and understands America as few men do. Why, you will understand when you read his autobiography, a copy of which Mr. McClure has inscribed for you." The inscription is to "Dear Niles", referring to Dr. Rumely's daughter, Mrs. Niles Rumely Newton, of Jackson Michigan. The L. E. Myers Co. of Valparaiso, marketed educational and published materials particularly to school children. NOTE: much of the first hundred pages revolved or involved Valparaiso, Indiana where his immigrant family settled.
