Book
Paperback large quarto, very good condition, black & white drawings & text-photos, maps, plans, slight bump base spine & few pages, minor edgewear. 187 pp. This book has been designed to help in the recording, analysis, and heritage assessment of mining heritage places. The main aim of the manual is to help non-specialists in the heritage or mining fields to make basic decisions about heritage values, and to be an aid in the nomination of mining heritage places to heritage registers. The manual does not cover complex issues like conservation, continued mining or rehabilitation of mine sites, through an understanding of a place's heritage significance is essential information in the resolution of these issues. The manual is a practical, easy to use book.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Book condition is good and very good. Soft cover. 1st edition. Printed in 1994. RARE AND SCARCE BOOK. Text body clean. Spine intact. Over-all an excellent. Barry McGowan is a historian, a heritage consultant, and a visiting fellow at the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at Australian National University in Canberra. He is the author of Australian Ghost Towns and Fool's Gold: Myths and Legends of Gold Seeking in Australia. See photos for synopsis and more information. This book is based on the report, Historical Mining in the Monaro Southern Tablelands Districts of News South Wales. The report was assisted with the funding under the News South Wales component of the National Estate Grants Program and sponsored by Canberra and District Historical Society. The report was submitted in November 1993. A considerable degree of local interest has been shown in the project from the outset, and consequently a number of copies of the report were made available for selected distribution. It soon became apparent, however, that this interest was far wider than expected. In addition, new material came to hand in the ensuing weeks and months which meant some chapters could now be revised, and in some instances considerably enhanced. It was decided, therefore, to processed with a more ambitious printing program and to revise the report while retaining as much of the original structure and content as possible. The present publication would not, however, have been possible but for the assistance and encouragement received from a number of sources. In particular, I am grateful for the continued assistance and advice from Ian Farrington of the Australian National University and for financial assistance received from the Australian Mining Industry Council. The council has a very active educational program known as the School Links Program which provides curriculum specific resource material and teachers and students assistance, and has shown a keen interest in the project from the outset. All chapters have been revised, and important additions have been made because of access to new documentary sources and the location of new sites. The shoalhaven, Primrose Valley and Terminology and Technology sections and chapters are most affected by these addition. New material has also enhanced the sections and chapters on Currawang, Kydra Reefs, and Big Badja and Gundaroo goldfields, and the Introduction, summary and conclusions chapter has been revised. They have also been revisions in layout and photos. It should be stressed that this book is not a travel or guide book to the guide fields, but essentially a heritage study. The main purpose of its dissemination at this stage is to meet the strong local interest in the history and heritage of the Monaro Southern Tablelands Districts and to encourage other similar studies or research. The historical sections in the original report were written with both heritage and social history objectives well in mind and should be of considerable value as an education resource material. Retention of the original site descriptions simply underlines the point that history is not only found in books and documents, but on the ground. There is one other purpose in publishing at this time. In the original report it was stated that subdivision and ownership transfer continued to pose threats to many sites. This process of loss is continuing apace throughout the region, and the need for awareness of local heritage issues by the general public, commercial and local government bodies has probably never been higher.
