First Edition
Presumed first edition (no direct statement but with this 1851 imprint being the earliest cited by OCLC). 151, [1] pages. Hardcover: H 17.25cm x L 11.75cm. Contemporary green cloth rubbed; some light stains to boards with corners bumped and lightly worn; slight sunning to spine with some shallow overlap into boards; frayed spine ends with small cloth loss at heel; spine's gilt lettering remains bright. Light pink endpapers; Past owner's (Samuel McCreary?) pencil signature repeated thrice on front free endpaper; ink signature "S.P. McCreary"[?] on rear pastedown (book obtained from a Meridian, Mississippi estate from a family with extended Alabama roots - might well be Samuel Preston McCreary, ca. 1837-ca. 1861 of Conecuh County); light to occasionally mild foxing throughout with a few scattered small dark stains. Binding is firm. Still a very good antiquarian copy. Elected Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1866, Holland Nimmons McTyeire (1824-1889) was co-founder of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. With Note and Preface. McTyeire contributes essay "Master and Servant" on pages 7-46. Reverend C.F. Sturgis of Greensboro, Alabama contributes "Melville Letters; or, the Duties of Masters to their Servants" (with its own title leaf and 1851 Charleston imprint) on pages 47-128. Reverend A.T. Holmes of Hayneville, Georgia contributes "Essay. The Duties of Christian Masters" (also with its own title leaf and 1851 Charleston imprint) on pages 129-151. Three essays solicited by contest on behalf of the Alabama Baptist State Convention in 1849 and confirmed in 1850 all advocating the responsibilities of owners to their slaves particularly deeming humane treatment as a Christian duty.
