Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Maps, Charts, Figures (illustrator). 1st. This study, the 27th of the London School of Economics Monographs on Social Anthropology, focuses on the migration of the mainly rural dwelling Maori people to the major urban centres in northern New Zealand. In the latter years of the 1930s, and during WWII, this migration began and gathered pace, with Auckland, the largest centre of population proving the most attractive destination. The movement was particulary dramatic through the 1950s and early 1960s. The author uses two Maori communities, one rural, one in Auckland, to follow the course of the migration, its social and racial impacts, rural/urban relations, employment, housing, traditional and cultural issues. This well researched study details one of the most important social events in NZ in the mid-1900s. 300 pages including statistical tables, glossary, bibligraphy and index at back, 16 b/w photos, 12 figures including maps, charts, figures. Orange hard covers with black spine titles VG with tiny fade band spine base, two columns ink signatures front pastedown with gift inscription from staff FFEP, dealer stamp lower right, light foxing both FEPs/back pastedown, text block otherwise excellent. Price clipped bown/white DJ VG with fade to spine extending slightly to front, light foxing to back surface, few small chips.

This book is in the first place meant to provide basic information for the many Pakeha who interact with Maori as spouses, friends, work colleagues and service providers to help them understand a family type different from their own.
