Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 168 p. Includes bibliography. Ghambageu. the apotheosized cultural hero of the Sonjo of Northern Tanzania, has traditionally had many affinities with Jesus. During the last six decades of Christian missionary efforts among the Sonjo, Ghambageu has increasingly developed into a Jesus-like figure. Christian churches have been remarkably unsuccessful in gaining active converts among the Sonjo. In their irrigation-based agricultural communities, culture, religion, economy and political power are closely linked together. The competition over the Sonjo souls is thus not only a religious issue but permeates the whole of the societal structure. For the Sonjo, the wenamijie, their traditional leaders with he power over the distribution of water, are remarkable social and religious actors. Limiting the spread of Christianity, or at least its social impact, has been a clear goal of the wenamijie, which they have successfully achieved through this "inverted conextualization". From their point of view, the change in the spiritual basis of their people would jeopardize the very survival of their communities in an inhospitable natural and cultural environment. 0.0.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book advances that history by exploring stories, images and discourses across a worldwide range of geographical, cultural and confessional contexts. Its twelve authors not only enrich our understanding of the significance of the contextual method, but also produce a new range of original ways of doing theology in contemporary situations. The authors discuss some prioritised thematic perspectives with an emphasis on liberating paths, and expand the ongoing discussion on the methodology of theology into new areas. Themes such as interreligious plurality, global capitalism, ecumenical liberation theology, eco-anxiety and the anthropocene, postcolonialism, gender, neo-pentecostalism, world theology, and reconciliation are examined in situated depth. Additionally, voices from Indigenous lands, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe and North America enter into a dialogue on what it means to contextualise theology in an increasingly globalised and ever-changing world.Such a comprehensive discussion of new ways of thinking about and doing contextual theology will be of great use to scholars in Theology, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, Political Science, Gender Studies, Environmental Humanities, and Global Studies. This book advances that history by exploring stories, images and discourses across a worldwide range of geographical, cultural and confessional contexts. Its twelve authors enrich our understanding of the significance of the contextual method and produce a new range of original ways of doing theology in contemporary situations.
