A selection 150 masterpieces, created from 1905 to 1913, is published in the catalogue on the occassion of a special exhibition held at the Groningen Museum. The catalogue »Duits Expressionisme 1905-1913« presents 150 pieces, among them paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by the »Brücke« members Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, Fritz Bleyl, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde, Cuno Amiet and Otto Mueller. A gift by Karl Schmidt-Rotluff in 1964 started the foundation of the collection and the »Brücke Museum«. The selection shows landscape depictions, acts in nature and studio, as well as portraits and still lifes, in all of which the artists' search for the elemental is articulated in radiant colours and raw forms. The rise of the »Brücke« movement announced the beginning of classsical modernism in Germany, the ideas and aesthetic ideals of which continue to play a powerful and crucial role in the visual arts. The catalogue treats the artists of the »Brücke« movement, and beyond, in seperate chapters, ordered according to the time their involvement in the movement became most noticeable. The rich and diverse choice of vivdly rendered paintings, sculptures, water colours and drawings is accompanied by insightful and well-researched essays on the artists and their art. (Verlagstext).
