Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Inaugural volume of this important anthology series, an ambitious early venture by publisher John Calder, who later described New Writers as trying to "combine different kinds of literature, experimental or not, occasionally poetry, short stories, work in progress of extracts from work we liked, but not enough to publish as a book on its own." This first volume consists of three short novels: The Scala Scare by Italian writer Dino Buzzati, translated by Cynthia Jolly; The Catfish by Monique Lange, translated by Barbara Wright; and Buster, the debut work by English experimental writer Alan Burns. First edition. Octavo (5.5 x 8.25 in.); 187pp.; light green, textured paper boards; gold spine lettering; in dust jacket. A few minor dings to the base of the textblock, else very fine: neat, sharp, and unmarked. In a very good (+) price-clipped jacket, with moderate edgewear, and some yellowish staining/offsetting to the rear panel.
