First Edition Signed
Morris, George Ford (illustrator). Limited edition. 56p + 5 photos. No. 186 of 200 copies, signed on behalf of, but perhaps not by, the author (this opinion comes from Frazier, Recognizing Derrydale Press Books). From the library of Richard Saltonstall West, with his bookplate. Lacks the glassine jacket, which was originally taped on. Lee's account of showing Saddlebreds from her farm, Leisure Hour Stables, with a focus on the 1938 five-gaited champion Midnite Star and a foiled gambling plot involving him. The photos show Midnite Star, Night Alarm, Carnation Diamond, and Kitty Lightnor. The frontispiece is a painting of Midnite Star by George Ford Morris. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate. (Wells 4469). Very good (would be fine except for light foxing on the endpapers and the usual few tapestains left from the removal of the jacket) Hardcover with gilt-stamped leather title label.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. Presumed First Edition (NAP). The book itself is in very nice condition. You can see the beautiful covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The dust jacket, no doubt, did an excellent job protecting them. I don't see any conspicuous wear. There is a tiny spot of rubbing on the rear side of the spine just off the top edge. All six cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The corners look very good, just a tiny bit of superficial rubbing, no rub-through. The spine looks very good. That includes the spine ends. The lettering is still fairly bright. The page edges are exceptionally clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. Importantly, this large and heavy book is very solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight from cover to cover (no exceptions) and the covers are nicely tight as well. There is No space between the spine and the textblock off the top edge, perfectly tight. So a terrific binding. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. Scrolling through the pages, I haven't found any instances of soiling. On the few pages with text there is only very light toning at the margins. There are an enormous number of illustrations, the large majority of them are in black and white. They are all in excellent condition. The pages look terrific, there's the lightest little semi-crease at the bottom corner of the first two pages. I don't think there's another crease to be found anywhere in the book. There are no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There are no attachments in the book. There is no writing of any kind. There are two little markings, little purple stampings of the name of the previous owner Alfred J. Roach, one on the blank front inside cover and one on the blank front end paper. I was fortunate to be able to go into his home and go through his library by myself back in 2010 when he was preparing to go into a nursing home at the age of 95. Alfred J. Roach lived a very interesting and adventurous life. He told his story in an autobiography titled Fire in My Belly published in 1998. He had a remarkably diverse career working among other things as a boxer, fireman, waterfront cargo checker, securities salesman, brewery company executive, and electronics manufacturer. He was the founder and President of Tii Network Technologies, a Telecommunications equipment company.' I've rated the dust jacket Poor because the front flap is missing. The first photo will give you a pretty clear look at the rest of the jacket so I don't need to go into too much detail but if you can't make it out there is a long tear at the juncture between the rear cover and rear flap. The jacket has a very large and wide fitted protective cover, although it's not wide enough to cover the rear flap. From the front cover of the jacket: 'Being a collection of more than five hundred reproductions of the artist's and author's work in oil, water color, pastel, crayon, charcoal, pen and pencil, as well as of his lithographs, etchings, silhouette cut-outs and sculpture; accompanied by autobiographical notes and comment covering a professional career of more than sixty-five years of effort in 'attempted portrayals of animals ad their friends'. Also 'With a Tribute by the author and an added autobiographical sketch as to the Wherefore and 'How-cum' of this book; also supplementary Postscriptal Personalia accompanied by numerous photographic illustrations, and works of other artists.' 'An outstanding equine artist, George Ford Morris painted portraits of horses for more than seventy years. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1873, Morris studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Julian Academy in Paris. Some of his earliest illustrations of horses for magazines were done when he was seventeen. Morris' work appeared in such publications as The Horseman, Breeder's Gazette, Western Horseman, American Field and American Horseman.
