There are two pop-ups of turkeys on the first and last pages; the other pages are collage and original prints that have been heightened with Pigma pens by hand. The text, "These feet / were made / for trotting / and that's / just what / they'll do. / One of / these days / they'll just / trot away / from you." is printed in light brown on tan "labels" on each page. The prints on the pages are in green, black, blue , gray, etc., and are of thick woody areas. There are red gates and flying turkeys - some of the turkeys are laser printed. Plastic, Tyvek and Frasier's passport paper are all used in the inventive collages that comprise each page. Pop up turkeys? Turkey feet? What more could anyone want in an artist's book?!. About this Item: Leonia, NJ, 2008. Artist's Book, one of 25 copies, each on marbleized paper over Bristol boards, signed and numbered by the artist / author, Lois Morrison. Page size: 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches; 14pp. Bound: accordion-style with vintage ribbons holding the book together. Three ribbons in multi-stripe - including blue which is the background color of the colophon pages - are inserted between the paper and Bristol boards. The cover is marbleized printed paper over board with title printed in blue; the text reads front to back and then in the reverse. It is printed with a Gocco printer in Garamond Italics in brown at the bottom of each page. The board of each page is cut out to frame a collage (actually 2 collages with board inserted btween them so they appear to "float") on blue paper, the collages of plastic and board colored with pigma micron pens. The drawings of the insects and garments are interpretations of a variety of photographs from multiple sources, altered to fit the spaces. The backgrounds are imaginary landscapes. The text reads, "When we see clothing / shown in natural settings, do we ever think, / or are we even aware of the myriads of insects / that share that setting? / They are living out their short lives / clicking, chewing and whirring; spinning, building or digging. / We hear the loud ones, of course / the crickets, cicadas and locusts, / but the dull, low hum that the others / produce in unison, we miss. / Still, they are invisibly there - / all the time."Another beautiful and provocative book from Lois Morrison celebrating the natural world. About this Item: [Leonia, NJ], 2005. One of 25 artist's books in form of tunnel , each containing a three-dimensional accordion-file bucolic scene of Geryon's red cattle, as well as three stand-alone cut-out figures, one of Geryon himself, with legs, arms, and wings grommeted so all 6 legs and arms and 2 wings move, and he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd and his red dog, jaws grommeted so that he can bear his teeth or not, and one figure of Geryon WITHOUT wings but with his six arms and legs gromted so that he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd. The artist's statement is Gocco-printed and color penciled onto digital color supreme glossy recycled Arches text wove paper and appears on each side of the "tunnel.". The figure is handcut and assembled from Fabriano Tiziano lava red paper. The text on the left side of the panorama recounts one of Hercules' twelve labors - the stealing of Geryon's cows - during which Hercules kills the six-armed, six-legged giant. The text on the right side of the panorama refers to an alternate version of the mythy, citing Anne Carson's AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RED in which she portrays a far more vulnerable Geryon, who had a red dog that was also killed by Hercules during his theft. The artist captions her panorama without words "Believe what you will." Another two-sided story - provocatively and beautifully told through visualization. Size: 5-3/8 inches x 9 inches opening to 4 inches; colophon on back of panorama within foldout case that also houses cut-out figure, the whole book housed in custom-made printed gold and red cloth case, lined with red silk, fastened with white buttons, fine. About this Item: [Leonia, NJ, 2011. Artist's book, one of 25 copies, on various papers, including Bristol Board Masa, Mulberry, Strathmore 400 and Crown Point Synergy, each numbered and signed by the artist / author, Lois Morrison. Page size: 4 x 8 inches, boards 5-1/2 inches wide to accommodate giraffes' necks which protrude beyond page size; 12pp. Bound: by the artist leporello style in accordion fold with boards covered in white book cloth with outline map of Africa in gold gilt, the book housed in fabric case of black cloth with the same gold gilt map of Africa. The text is hand lettered by the artist. The giraffes themselves are printed on interference-splattered frosted plastic. The artist / author has used a Gocco printer for all, and has hand-touched all with Pigma pens, except the landscape which was color copied. She explains in the artist's statement that, "the book is based on a fortunate mis-reading of Temple Grandin's writing about friendships between giraffes, among others, "Aeolian". Aeolus is the god of winds so they must be the most delicately beautiful creatures on the African plains. Re-reading the passage, I realized the word was "Angolan", but by then it was too late; the image had taken hold." The resulting fantasy is this book. The giraffes themselves are collaged in three-dimensional "pens" that all the reader to see several at once, along with the requisite collaged binoculars and cameras necessary for any African photo safari. The necks of the giraffes extend beyond the pages so that all are visible once the front cover is opened, poking majestically out from the folded pages. A wonderfully whimsical book, an homage to an elusive creature. Seller Inventory # 10504

About this Item: Flying Fish Press, Berkeley, 2017. Condition: Fine. Number 13 of 50 copies. Written and illustrated by Lois Morrison. Designed and printed by Julie Chen. Book artists Julie Chen and Lois Morrison have been friends for 40 years and have worked together on three artists' book collaborations including Ste. Ostrich in Manhattan: The Visitations of a Martyr (1990) and this, their most recent work - A Recuredo for Ste. Ostrich. Julie Chen is an internationally known book artist who has been publishing limited edition artists books under the Flying Fish Press imprint for over 30 years. She is also a professor of book art at Mills College in Oakland, California. Lois Morrison has been producing both paper and fabric books for more than 30 years, A recuerdo is a memento, in this work a votive offering to a saint or divinity given in gratitude or devotion. In Mexico there is a long tradition of these offerings that give thanks for a miracle or favor. This house-shaped votive with a triptych structure recounts several stories about Ste. Ostrich. The outside tells about and shows the intercession of the Sainte when a breakdown strands a mother and daughter in the desert. Inside are a series of connected stories recounting the ostrich's saga - her unappreciated gift of sand, first at the birth of the baby Jesus, then by the sisters in a convent, then by the people of the Mexico. All this leads to her martyrdom and later beatification. This work seems to be looking through a glass darkly - the gift trom the ostrich is rejected by all and the ostrich is depicted here as a moveable creature who breaks her neck trying to bury her head at the bottom of a swimming pool. But ultimately it is seen that even the seemingly most unworthy, even the lowly ostrich who "God hath deprived ? of wisdom ?[and] understanding" (Job 39: 13-17) is valuable and able to perform miracles. Ex-voto painting on front covers created by Elizabeth Collins. Printed letterpress on a variety of papers including paper made at Papeterie Saint-Armand.Book and artifacts made and assembled at Flying Fish Press. Ste. Ostrich is made to move by pressing a lever extending from the right side of the book. There is a pullout drawer that opens in the front that houses related artifacts and the colophon.Text in English and Spanish. The house-shaped structure measures 9.25 x 12 x 3 inches. In fine condition. ARTISTSB/101817. Seller Inventory # 31456
