Wraps. Condition: good. presumed First Edition, First printing. [2], 57, [1] pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Footnotes. Maps. Suggested References. Some wear and soiling to covers. This is one of the Understanding the Atom series. There are 51 booklets in the "Understanding the Atom Series" series published by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The booklets can be grouped into the categories of physics, chemistry, biology, nuclear reactors, the environment, and general interest. Nine of the booklets were available in French and 15 were available in Spanish. This booklet describes the environmental investigations that have been conducted with the aid of the atom since the first atomic detonation near Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945. The story is one of beginnings that point the way, it is hoped, to a new understanding of the world in the atomic future. Hines was a member of the Bikini Resurvey Expedition conducted by the University of Washington Applied Fisheries Laboratory for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1949.
