Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Second Edition. An early edition by an early Canadian author. This edition is important because it is the first bound with "An Account of the Country of the Oregon", an anonymous description of the Pacific northwest, probably by an employee of the Hudson (Charles G. Nicolay). The publisher apparently assumed that Ontario and Oregon were close and of equal interest to readers. Traill was an established author before she moved with her Scottish husband to Ontario in 1832. This book is an important source for information about early settlements and for relations between Canadians, Americans and natives. Traill's work includes 20 illustrations, including waterfalls, birds, animals, farming scenes and "A chart showing Interior Navigation of the Districts of Newcastle and Upper Canada". There is also a frontis of "Peter, the Chief". The Oregon work includes a frontis map of Oregon, including both the Fraser and Columbia River Valleys (Oregon territory was not divided between the US and Britain until this year - 1846). Description: gently ex libris (small ownership stamp on title page of "The People's Library Newport, R.I.", probably nineteenth century. Original marbled boards (worn) with ugly black tape over spine. Leather corners worn and showing boards. Original marbled endpapers, but the front free end paper is missing. All edges originally marbled to match the end papers; now very faded. There are two paginations for the two works: Traill's book on Ontario: viii, 351 pp. The Oregon title is 78 p. plus the map frontis.

First edition, first issue. First edition, first issue. Frontispiece and 2 maps (one folding). 226 pp. 1 vols. 16mo. In 1846 the joint British/American occupation of the Oregon Territory was terminated with the British/ Canadian boundary extended along latitude 49 degrees N to Puget Sound, then to the ocean through Juan de Fuca Strait. The controversy about this boundary division resulted in the famous slogan "Fifty-four Forty or Fight!" This work was apparently written and published shortly before the settlement in June of 1846 as he does discuss the boundary offers by either side and the pros and cons involved. The work covers a history of the settlement of the lands, native tribes, commercial possibilities and trading and other aspects of the area. A very interesting work. Howes N151; Sabin 55257; Smith 7311; Wagner-Camp Becker 122c.1; Soliday 562; Tweney 57 Contemporary half green calf. New spine. Some wear to corners, internally fine Frontispiece and 2 maps (one folding). 226 pp. 1 vols. 16mo.
