Heavy toning and foxing throughout, a short range of damp-staining up-front, else clean and unmarked of interior. Penciled inscription at third free endpaper. Tissue-guarded fine engraving by William N. Dunnel after a daguerrotype of J. Da Vasconcellas, J.F. Lomelino, and Mrs. C. Vasconcellas, three Protestants persecuted at Madeira. Another fine plate of N.T. Viera, also tissue-guarded. These Protestant sufferers as against Catholics at Madeira are depicted in hagiography. Second Edition and with Index, providing testimony of living witnesses to the facts of this persecution and including Letters from Dr. Robert R. Kalley. This hagiography covers the Protestant movement on Madeira island off the coast of Africa and who endured severe harassment. Rioting Catholic mobs beat and tortured them and several murders, aided also by government soldiers, pro-Catholic. the Presbyterians "fled to the caves and ravines in the nearby hills. As a result, the bulk of the Portuguese Protestants left the island in a wave of immigration," mostly to the Springfield, Illinois area (Herald News, 2017). Frontis matter, 6-228 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
