Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. In 1975 Price Chopper super market contracted with, now deceased, Syracuse artist and graphic designer Richard Albino to create a series of promotional books aimed at children. "Rhymes and Reasons of Nutrition - Energy Foods Coloring Book" is one of those efforts. The cover and a central page spread reveal the then current influence of Peter Max's psychedelic style . very colorful and fanciful. ************************************* The pages to be colored feature cartoon caricatures of various food types, including bacon strips dancing in a frying pan, a banana playing tennis, an ear of corn playing golf, etc. However one page spread features realistic children playing. The central page spread is already pre-colored and features what one might think of as the Peaceable Kingdom of Foods. It's all quite delightful . Not many of these that have survived in fact this seems to be the only specimen being offered on line. Printed on newsprint, the book has a few minute edge tears on the top of the rear cover and soft bumps to the corners, else it is in very nice condition with bright color. As with all such newsprint publications, the paper is toned, albeit only mildly. *************************************** TITLE : Rhymes and Reasons of Nutrition - Energy Foods Coloring Book / AUTHOR / ARTIST : Richard Albino / PUBLISHER : Price Chopper / PLACE : No place stated , [but Syracuse NY] / DATE : 1975 / EDITION : First Edition, presumed / STATUS : OP - SCARCE / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Coloring book with one central page spread which is pre-colored; 16 pages, including exterior; approximately 8 1/2" x 10 1/2", color-pictorial , self-wrapped paper - two staples. Printed on newsprint. **************************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD -Previously owned, but not colored in . Exceptionally well preserved, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR : Surface rub is mild; there is what seems to be a minute pencil mark on the front cover under the 'S' in REASONS; the top edge of rear cover has a few minute tears; corner tips are softly bumped; light fading of color along the fore-edge of the rear cover may be a production effect / BINDING : Solid / INTERIOR : Paper throughout is slightly toned, and the whole is clean and presentable with none of the pictures colored in.
Published by E. Ferret, agent for the Wright Company, 1888
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good. This is "Wright''s Pictorial Family Almanac, 1889" . The Publisher, E. Ferrett, was the agent for the Wright Company, who manufactured Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills, which were a patent medicine - or Quack Medicine if you will - that promised to cure just about everything from the moon to the clouds in the sky. On the second leaf of the almanac is a handsome engraving of an Indian chief in full feathered war head dress. In the far distance behind him can be seen a side-paddle steam boat. There are ephemerides for each month of the year; these are accompanied by comic illustrations on the pages opposite., which depict mildly humorous situations and generally are quite accurate depictions of the styles of that time (1889) . ************************************ One illustration features a crowd witnessing the famous tightrope walker Blondin as he balances far overhead. Blondin was an actual historic celebrity of the time, and an inclusion of a reference to him shows that the Wright company were fully aware of popular interests. Advertisements for various other patent medicines manufactured by Wright are scattered through the book. These include Roman Eye Balm, Dr. H. F. Peery s Vermifuge, or Dead Shot for Worms, AND DR. MCMUNN S ELIXER OF OPIUM. The rear cover has a small paneled comic strip, "History of a stormy night and a glorious morning , which is an ad for The Indian Vegetable Pills *********************************** The almanacs were sold to druggists and dry goods stores around the country, who then distributed them gratis to their customers. Almanacs were a very common item and it was rare to find any household that did not have an almanac of some sort hanging around. There was certainly a lot to look at and read in these booklets. Now they are collectable curiosities. On the rear cover is printed the name of the druggist who gave away the almanac : Harrington & Rundle, Horseheads, NY. There is a faint overstamp of another druggist - A. M. Corel, Horseheads - who likely took over the Harrington & Rundle business. Almanacs were almost always issued with holes through which string could be passed and looped so the almanac could be hung in a handy place. I deleted the string from our gallery picture (with the green background), but you can see it in another view we provide, in which we have left the string to view. ************************************* SERIES : Yearly Almanac / TITLE: Wright's Pictorial Family Almanac for 1889 / IMPRINT : E. Ferritt (Agent for Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills) / PLACE : 372 Pearl Street, New York / DATE PRINTED : 1888 / DETAILS : Pictorial paperback; contains the standard ephemerides (astrological sun, moon, and star charts); has several handsome engraved illustrations, as well as several advertisements for Wright products; 24 pages; approx. 5 1/4" x 8 1/8", pictorial wraps, stapled (two staples). On the front cover title and other lettering presented in a variety of fonts. Pictured to either side of the title are Minerva (with a helmet and spear), and Hygeia (holding a snake). Below them , at the foot of the cover is a picture of three Indians standing and sitting in front of a teepee. On the rear of the cover is an eight panel cartoon which is an ad for Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills. ************************************** CONDITION GOOD PLUS This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections noted : EXTERIOR : Mouse nibble to the foot of the spine, creating a 2 inch split at the bottom og the spine (very neatly done o wee mousie!) The staples have rusted and stained the paper (really there is hardly anything left of the staples but for the small rust stains). Soft bumps to corner tips, with small crease to foot of spine. / BINDING : Tender but holding - the whole still seems fairly solid. / INTERIOR : Clean and free of marking. The small rust discolorations from the deceased staple follow throughout.
Published by Whitman Publishing Company, 1928
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is the 1928 "Children's Annual Pitter Patter Book", the third such that was issued by the Whitman Publishing Company in Racine, Wisconsin. Whitman was one of the largest publisher's of nursery and children's books in the United States. The "Pitter Patter Books" were published annually for a while. They contained a veritable treasure trove of stories, songs and activities. Some of the activities and stories were educational, and some were just outright silly and fun. Lots of illustrations, some of which were fairly sophisticated in style. On the title page is a statement of content: "The material in this Pitter Patter Book, as well as the previous Pitter Patter books, is collected from the pages of the "Junior Home Magazine", of Chicago, the well-known children's publication. The variety, quality, and entertainment in this book is due to the excellence of that monthly periodical." The authors of various stories, poems, and articles in the book are all credited at the start of each. ///// TITLE : The Children's Annual Pitter Patter Book (Third Annual, W688) AUTHOR : Various (Staff of "Junior Home Magazine". IMPRINT : Whitman Publishing Co. PLACE : Racine, Wisconsin DATE : (1928) EDITION : First Printing of Third Annual. STATUS : OP. ----- This is an Illustrated Children's Annual; 208 pages; approximately 6" x 7 3/4"; color - pictorial paper-covered boards. (Wrap around illustration depicting a little boy and girl with their pet dog sailing down a stream in a little boat, past a family of bears having a picnic). Interior reproduction of illustrations is crude. The printing of the text is similarly primitive. CONDITION . GOOD PLUS ----- Clean and intact with wear that is partly production - related, and partially from the previous owner . The reproduction of the pictures was low quality, as you can see, and varied in printing quality from page to page. Also the paper used was of a low grade, and thus all copies found of this book have paper that is considerably toned. So that is what collectors have to deal with, and what is left is nostalgia and memory, and the hopes that previous owners were not overly rough when handling the book. This copy fared fairly well; I spotted a few pages that had been marked (I saw one that was crayoned which I show above and another that seems to display pencil erasures: the faces page, again shown above), but for the most part the interior is clean and presentable. ----- the following noted: EXTERIOR Creasing and small splitting along the front joint; spine extremities compressed and chipped; board corner tips are bumped; there are what look to be small spots of pinkish water color paint in the center of the front board (this is not so egregious in appearance as it might seem (see picture). No marks on rear cover. Surface rub is moderate. BINDING As solid as can be hoped. No leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR The paper is unavoidably toned (browned). This is a production effect, and all copies found will be so toned. I spotted a couple of instances of page use: an owl is colored in (see picture ), and the funny face page seems to have pencil erasures (again, see picture ). For the most part the interior is clean. This collector's book as a whole must be considered fragile, and would certainly no longer be suitable for use by a child, except under close guidance by an adult.
